13-year-old girls everywhere commence to scream. This EP has more angled bangs, catchy beats, lip rings, and lead singers ruminating over romance than you could ever want. Local pop/indie punk bands The Epilogues and The Photo Atlas have combined forces to create a joint album, and these six songs are chock full of cute guys in tight pants singing about – you guessed it – girls.
Not to poke too much fun at these bands, however: even though they’ve gone along with the current popularity of the indie-punk look, they’re definitely not without talent. The album flows well, as both bands possess sounds similar enough to get away with a clean and concise CD that’s organized well.
The first three songs on the album are by The Photo Atlas, one being a cover of The Epilogues song “King Arthur.” The Epilogues take the second half of the EP, and their third song is a cover of The Photo Atlas’ “Handshake Heartattack.” While I prefer The Photo Atlas’ songs a bit more, especially “Hot Spring,” which has an addictive rhythm and punchy guitar line, The Epilogues’ songs are also strong and tightly organized.
It’s difficult to review an album that features two bands, because it’s hard to know what to focus on and what advice to give. Really, the only way to analyze a joint album like this is to examine how it works as a whole, and The Friendship EP works quite well.
