One listen to Candy Claws new album In the Dream of the Sea Life and I was hooked. This ten-song ambient-electronica CD is a musical companion to Rachel Carson’s 1951 book, The Sea Around Us and comes packaged in a DVD case that includes a full color insert on delicate paper with beautiful imagery, a sticker, and a handmade piece of art. The packaging only adds to the charm.
The album is fresh, young, and alive. The tracks offer the listener a chance to dive deep below the surface to something new. Candy Claws capture the sounds of the ocean and the ambiance that surrounds it. In fact, members of the group spent a summer in Italy and the Philippines, where wave sounds were recorded and used on the disc.
Each track is as delicate as the paper insert, with lots of intricacies taking place to create a passionate sound. Many different instruments are present and the vocals create a fine harmony that blend into the orchestration.
Although each song is amazing, I especially liked two songs. “The Sun is My Girl” begins as a guitar riff with a vocal whisper that grows into a chant complete with a rhythmic groove. “Island Grows” takes you to a beach, warm with a salty ocean breeze kissing your sunburned face.
Not only did I fall in love with the band, but I fell in love with a new side of local music. I’m positive that this is a direct result of the sincere honesty that shines through on each track.
